The old man is dead. It is really ironic when he died too. Tas just finished telling everybody what he was going to say at the old man's funeral (all the while everyone thinks he is crazy [except the old man], they are just listening to humor him), when the man said he had to go get something to drink. On the way down the stairs, he had a sudden heart attack and fell down the stairs. Everybody ran out of the room and went to where he had fallen. He knew he was going to die any minute, so he called for the guard to come to him. The guard knelt, and the old man said to him, "Tas is a friend of mine from long ago, I believe his story and would be honored if you would too. Will you accompany him to a sorcerer in the West Mountains?". And so he died.

Tassellhof has left jail (it never says how) and has arrived at the house of the most respected man( who is nearing 110 years old) of the village. When the guard shows up at the house, he is surprised to see that the man is embracing Tassellhof, yelling "Old friend, it is so good to see you!". Tassellhof says something that surprises everybody, "I have come from the future by clicking a random button on this thingy!". Everybody is breathless, and then start laughing hysterically. Tas (Tasselhoff's nickname) suddenly gets very serious and says he wants to recite his speech for the old man's funeral. The old man says "Well, what are you waiting for? I want to hear the best speech in the world if it is going to be for my funeral, old friend.".

My favorite character so far is a Kinder named Tasselhof. A Kinder is a different species, that are most comparable to dwarves from fantasy novels. They are smaller creatures that are joyful in nature, but have a bad habit of being kleptomaniac. They steal the smallest things so skillfully that only the sharpest of eye could notice. All other races loath them for the fact that they are always joyful and full of spirit in a time full of war and chaos. They believe that they should be more somber and dutiful. Tasselhof is a Kinder that claims he can time travel by a divice that was given to him by a famous wizard. I like him because he is so clueless to what is actually going on around him. For example, a Knight of Takhesis put him in jail and stood guard to make sure he didn't do anything, all the while Tasselhof was thanking him a lot for keeping him company in a room was that custom made for the size of a Kinder.

This book is about a few different things at once. It tells what is going on for a few different characters that, even now, have nothing to do with each other, apart that they all live on the same world. Mina, a girl who appears to be about eighteen, walks out of a fog that was created by a great storm that appeared out of nowhere. She walks into the camp of who is called by most "the Dark Knights" (The book also says that they prefer to be known as the Knights of Takhesis, Takhesis being their deity). She tells the Knights that she has come to spread the word about the one true god. She then proceeds to restore the arm of a Knight that had to be amputated in the past for a gruesome wound. This, along with mysteriously walking out of the deviastating storm, convinces the Knights to follow her wherever she goes.
